Eligibility

Federal employees are eligible for union membership if there is a union at their worksite.

An employee who is not sure if AFGE represents them should contact the AFGE National Vice President (NVP) who represents that area. You can look up who your NVP is by using our District Directory. The NVPs have a better overall knowledge of who, within their District Locals, is in or out of the bargaining unit. If the NVP is unable to assist, the Membership and Organization Department (M&O) will gladly do the research. You can contact the M&O Department by calling (202) 639-6410.

Dues

The average AFGE member pays between $14 - $16 per pay period for union dues.

AFGE is a democratic organization in which the members of each Local decide what the Local's dues should be. The monthly per capita tax (currently $19.75) must be paid, and depending on what funds the Local needs to operate on, additional dues are assessed. Membership forms and instructions to join can be found at the Join AFGE page.
